Stock market plunge continues

Trader Michael McCabe works on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange on a day stocks again plunge, taking the Dow Jones Industrial average to a five-year low. The S&P 500 index falls 6.7 percent to its lowest close since April 1997. The Dow's two-day drop of 873 points, or 10.6 percent, is its worst two-day percentage loss since October 1987.

Democratic leaders in Congress put off a vote on bailing out the auto industry until next month and want the top companies to present a plan showing the money will make them financially viable. Fewer Mexicans

A Mexican government survey shows a sharp drop in emigration – a 42 percent drop from 2006. In all of 2007, some 814,000 Mexicans left the country, compared to 1.2 million in 2006.

Man sentenced in slaying
A Lakeside man convicted of murder in the killing of his real estate agent is sentenced to 40 years to life in prison. A jury previously found Michael Ray Jennison, 38, guilty of second-degree murder for shooting James Magot
