Jewish Academy guard in rare position

Students at San Diego Jewish Academy never worry about Andrew Retzer sneaking up on them. The skinny senior with curly black hair and an infectious smile has brought his love for basketball to the small school's Carmel Valley campus one thud at a time.

In the hallways, the lunchroom and sometimes in math class, Retzer is known for his bouncing legacy.

LCC wins title; Escondido's Seale sets season rushing record: Ricky Seale broke the record, but La Costa Canyon won the title. The Mavericks topped Escondido 45-28 at Qualcomm Stadium on Friday night to capture the San Diego Section Division I championship.

Receiver sets record in Valley Center's title win: Valley Center High receiver James Johnson caught two touchdown passes and set the San Diego Section record for career receiving yards as the Jaguars defeated the Madison Warhawks 31-20 Friday in the Division IV championship at Qualcomm Stadium.

Course volunteer is in the running: For three years, University City High's Sheree Shea has been at the Foot Locker National Cross Country Championships bright and early.

Mavericks finally get their 'Q' : Sept. 26, 2008. Approximately 10:45 p.m. That's when everything changed. About 30 minutes earlier, the La Costa Canyon High football team had lost to Santa Margarita in the final minute. Players were despondent and embarrassed by the collapse. Many didn't want to leave the locker room. Parents were calling cell phones, wondering where their children were.

LC Canyon looking out for No. 1: At the beginning of the season, no one seemed more surprised than the La Costa Canyon girls volleyball team by its billing as best in the nation.

Div. III volleyball: Cathedral's first state title has Williamson's signature: It was Lexi Williamson's world. San Francisco Sacred Heart Cathedral was just living in it.
